Pennsylvania Election Recap – A Personal Tale

So yesterday was the Pennsylvania election that saw good judges elected statewide, and a a Democrat elected as Montco DA for the first time in history. Across the board we won some, lost some, but the trend is good. (And better than Kentucky where 400,000 people will lose their health insurance because they didn’t get out and vote for the one person who would have saved that benefit).

Yesterday morning, under my windshield wiper was a flyer supporting a Catholic organization asking for money (envelope provided) to help kill gays. I saw a neighbor last night who said he wasn’t planning on voting yesterday, but did because he saw that flyer and felt an obligation to vote against the kind of people who put out those flyers.

I worked the polls and we had 5 BRAND NEW VOTERS including 2 who had recently become citizens. When a new voter approaches the check-in table, everything stops, the clerk yells “New Voter” and everyone applauds and we take their picture with a copy of a blank ballot. WHAT JOY!!!

Also while clerking, some people arrived and handed over their Drivers License. I would wave it away and say “No, that law was overruled as being in violation of both the US and Pennsylvania Constitutions”. Some people were so relieved and glad, and others, well, they yelled about how ID was important, and how would I know they were Americans. All of the latter group, complete with arrogance and umbrage, were Republicans. Some of them made comments along the lines of the guy who glared at me and said “I can smell that you’re a Democrat.” I was so proud.

Folks — elections matter. Primaries and caucuses start in less than three months. Ben Carson and Donald Trump are leading the dark side, get out and start working NOW for the side of truth and light. It’s not just the presidency next year – it’s the whole 435-member House of Representatives, at least 34 Senate seats, plus state and row offices that feed up the stream. Get out and explain to people NOW that racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, etc. are all wrong so that they’ll come out and vote against the haters next year. Don’t leave it until the last weekend.

Thanks for all you do. Now go do more.
