If you're a longtime DCW reader you know we love hotel assignments. Normally there are a lot of politics you can read into where each delegation is in relation to the arena. This year hotels were picked by a lottery. Vermont got the #1 pick.
56 Charlotte area hotels will house the state delegations. You can view a pdf of the hotel zones here. The Hilton Center City and Westin Charlotte will serve as the convention headquarters.

Democratic National Convention Committee Announces State Delegation Hotel Assignments, Convention Headquarters Hotels 56 hotels to house state delegations, Hilton Center City and Westin Charlotte to serve as headquarters hotels
CHARLOTTE – Democratic National Convention Committee CEO Steve Kerrigan announced another major milestone in convention planning today: the hotel assignments for the approximately 6,000 delegates to the 2012 Democratic National Convention and the headquarters hotels.
The Hilton Charlotte Center City and the Westin Charlotte will be the headquarters hotels: the base of operations for the DNCC, The Democratic National Committee and Obama for America. The hotels will be used for official business and for a meeting place for convention organizers and DNC and OFA staff.
Delegations have been assigned to hotels in one of five zones – Uptown, South Park, I-77/Airport, University and Concord – all within 20 minutes of Time Warner Cable Arena and Bank of America Stadium. Delegates are expected to arrive the weekend before the convention for official welcome events. Not only will delegates fill rooms, but they’re expected to use hotels for daily meetings, meals and receptions.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for local hotels to promote their business to guests from all across the country. Not only is Charlotte uniquely appointed for hosting an event like this, with hotel zones closer to convention venues than in the past, but the Southern hospitality of the local hotel community will make guests return visitors,” said DNCC CEO Steve Kerrigan. “We trust that all of our delegations will be pleased with their assignments, and we’re delighted to announce that the Westin and the Hilton Center City will serve as our headquarters hotels. Both hotels have exceptional service and accommodations and are a short walk from the Time Warner Cable Arena, Bank of America Stadium and the Charlotte Convention Center.”
The DNCC began securing rooms in local hotels in spring of 2011, shortly after Charlotte was selected to host the convention. The DNCC has contracted more than 15,000 rooms in 150 hotels. 6,700 rooms in 56 hotels will be used for delegations. While delegates will stay in the five zones, the DNCC has contracted rooms from Rock Hill to Salisbury for other guests.
The delegate housing process began in September with a lottery to determine each state’s priority preference. In October and November, representatives from each state’s delegation visited Charlotte to tour a selection of hotels. In December states submitted their top three zone choices, their top three hotel choices, and other requests such as meeting space, budget, and access for persons with disabilities. The DNCC housing team then worked to match each delegation to a hotel that fits their needs. Hotels and delegations were notified this morning of their assignment. Delegations are expected to return to Charlotte in the coming months to scout out meeting and venue space in or near their hotels.
