Conventional Wisdom

Wednesday night updates

  • Union members are getting plenty of work in Charlotte
  • The official DNC stores are open for business
  • Hillary Clinton is heading to the Cook Island, China and Russia
  • Political scientist Tom Holbrook predicted, pre-Isaac, convention bumps of 3.6 points for Romney and 1.1 point for Obama.
  • One journalist makes a case for why conventions still matter
  • Four times since 1988 a candidate who was behind in the polls before the first convention, moved ahead after the second, and went on to win the popular vote in November. (One, however, lost the vote at the Supreme Court and did not become President). ('88, '92 and '04 were the other years)
  • The number of people watching conventions was constant from 1976 through 1992, Dipped quite a bit from 1996 through 2004, and shot way up in 2008. It hasn't been the steady decrease always assumed.
