| Chuck Hagel? John Brennan? Interesting choices. I just want to start by saying the interesting choice I want to see is Paul Krugman for Treasury. The Hagel choice is fascinating in this political environment. On the up side, Chuck is a Vietnam vet who still carries shrapnel, and therefore knows the true costs of war. On the other hand, he may be anti-gay, which would be bad for the person overseeing the new age post-DADT. He may also be an anti-Semite. Have his views have changed since the "openly, aggressively, gay" comment about James Hormel 15 years ago? He should have to answer to his comments about Jews in general, and Israel (the Haifa USO in particular), and testimony should come from Nebraskan Jews. Read the background here. I would not want an anti-Semite in office any more than I would want a racist, or any other hater. It will be an interesting hearing. Brennan? There is still the issue of torture. He claimed four years ago that he didn't believe in torture, but the whispers derailed his nomination at that time. Again, it will be interesting to watch the hearing. Back to Paul Krugman. There could not be a better choice. Not only is he a Nobel Prize-winning economist, but he pegged what would happen back in '08, and he's been right every step of the way. His overall credentials are impeccable, and there is not a better choice. The question is whether Obama can see this. Years ago, I remember seeing Obama make a comment about Paul Krugman where it appeared he didn't know who Krugman was, nor anything about his positions. At the time (and I can't find the video), Obama said he'd be willing to listen. If there's a better choice, I'd like to hear it. And if Krugman is not picked, I'd like the White House to explain why. I feel so strongly about this that I placed a petition on whitehouse.gov. You can sign here. |
