Three Ohio cities vying for Convention while Salt Lake City bows out

by: Oreo

Fri Dec 27, 2013 at 09:35:07 AM EST

Ohio's three largest cities want to host one or both of the major political party conventions in 2016, events that could elevate the state's already high political capital and mean hundreds of millions of dollars for a city's economy.

Officials in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus plan to apply to host either the Republican or Democratic national conventions. Despite Ohio's importance as a swing state in presidential elections, the state has not hosted a major political party convention since 1936. The state held five conventions since 1856, two for Democrats and three for Republicans. - HuffPo

Utah GOP leaders have decided not to pursue a bid for Salt Lake City to host the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Chairman James Evans says the decision was based on concerns about the $30-million a host city must raise. He also says that it is likely that national officials will choose a city in a swing state.  - KUTV
