Michael Grimm is a criminal. And really ugly for wanting to throw a reporter off a balcony. If you missed the latter, the video is here. The real story is the seat, The NY 11th, Staten Island. The sole Republican hold in the City. Previously held before redistricting as the 13th, by Vito Fossella, who might actually run again if the GOP can get Grimm off the ballot. As an aside, to get Grimm off the ballot, he either has to be convicted, die, or run for a judgeship. Huh. Shades of Ted Stevens in Alaskan 2008: which will come first, the conviction or the election?

Here's the deal: Michael Grimm is likely going to be found guilty of cheating his employees, maltreating his employees, cheating on his taxes, mail fraud, wire fraud, and that's BEFORE they level charges related to his election campaign and anything else he did in office, investigation ongoing. The current charges (20 count indictment! relate to a health food restaurant he owned in Manhattan. He didn't think enough of his Staten Island district to place a business there. Thank about it: liar, cheater, creep, thug, and then went home to Staten Island.
But that pales in comparison to the sheer stupidity of Vito Fossella. Did he cheat on his wife? Sure. Have a child with his mistress? Sure. Drink? Sure. But to have called his mistress to bail him out of a DUI when his chief of staff lived walking distance from the police station? Idiot. And then, the floor speech. He cried. But the outrageous thing was that he wouldn't leave Congress.
I don't know why I should be surprised. I mean, Mike Crapo is a convicted drunk, and he's still a Senator. Oh, and a Mormon minister. Really.
Don't get me wrong, we have Democratic criminals. If you are a long time reader, you know that my personal pick fave Democratic criminal is Charlie Rangel, Congressman of what is now the 13th CD in NY. The most population dense CD in the entire country. His crime? He has four rent controlled apartments. To a native New Yorker, there really may be no higher crime. FOUR!!! So painful. Also, he's a parking scofflaw. Yeah, and a few other things, but they don't really count: they're out of the country.
Seriously, though, we have criminals: it's normally about money and misuse of government employees. But rarely about mistresses. And we hold our people accountable: look at Eliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner, our sex-criminals. Neither has really recovered. Unlike, say, David Vitter whose hooker went to jail, and he's still in the Senate. Our guys stand up like men and take their medicine. (Note: no women criminals on our side. On their side? Think Spunky Palin for starters.) Our guys do the time. And we're glad to see that because we actually do hold the moral core on right vs wrong. We laugh at the idea that Rod Blagojovich could have potentially shared a cell with his immediate predecessor. (Sad he had to give up his hair care line. They really were good products.) But he's in jail where he belongs because you don't sell a Senate seat even if you are a governor.
When Matt started DCW back in 2005, there were political criminals. But it was a different era. The biggest criminals back then were Shrub, the Prince of Darkness and the Rummy neo-con contingent. Their crimes were against humanity and they have yet to be brought to justice at the Hague. Everyone else just stole. Now we have an entire Republican Party dedicated to protecting sex offenders and obstructionists and they still steal. They've turned the country for the worse, and you should be energized to work against them, within the law, and especially in the ballot box. It's an election year, kids. Let's get to work.
