Mixed July Jobs Report (SarahLawrence Scott)
While 163,000 jobs were added in June, the headline unemployment rate (U-3) rose to 8.3%, and the employment to population ratio dropped 0.2 to 58.4%. The percentage of the unemployed who got there by losing jobs (rather than quitting or joining the labor force) dropped back from 56.7 to 56.1%, but is still higher than in the spring. The percentage of the unemployed who have been so for 27 weeks or longer continued to drop, from 41.9 to 40.7%, the lowest since 2009. Underemployment (U-6) ticked up from 14.9 to 15.0%. Hours worked was flat and hourly earnings increased by 0.1%. --BLS
