ND selects 25 national delegates

by: Matt

Sat Mar 31, 2012 at 22:14:40 PM EDT

At the North Dakota GOP State Convention, a slate of state party approved, and apparently mostly pro-Romney, delegates was approved, despite Romney coming in third in the state caucuses earlier this month. The convention was very contentious, with Santorum and Paul supporters complaining bitterly about the process. Note that all the delegates are unbound, essentially meaning we will need to find endorsements for each one before adding them to any candidate's list.

Endorsement count:

Romney - 5
Santorum - 1
Paul - 0

Here are the delegates:

  • John Hoeven, U.S. Senator - Romney
  • Rick Berg, U.S. Congressman
  • Betsy Dalrymple, North Dakota first lady
  • Wayne Stenehjem, state attorney general - Romney
  • Robert Harms, NDGOP treasurer - Romney
  • Kyle Handegard
  • Clare Carlson - Romney
  • Gary Emineth, former NDGOP chairman - Santorum
  • Joe Miller
  • Margaret Sitte
  • Delores Rath
  • Jim Poolman, NDGOP vice-chairman - Romney
  • Kelly Schmidt, state treasurer
  • Paul Henderson
  • Gary Lee
  • Francis Klein
  • Mike Schatz
  • Carol Nitschke
  • Shane Goettle, U.S. House candidate
  • Caren Mikesh
  • Karen Rohr
  • Craig Headland
  • Paul Owens
  • Jim Kasper
  • John Kerian

No accident (0.00 / 0)
The entire GOP process is no accident. It's clearly designed to nominate moderates even though the party is more and more to the far right. In a uniform process, where all states were WTA or all states were proportional, santo wouldn't be anyway near as far behind the delegate count.

So much for he Rules (0.00 / 0)

in North Dakota, while the rules do not bind the state convention to precisely follow the results of the straw poll, they do "suggest" that the delegate selection should "fairly" reflect the results of the staw poll.

I guess these delegates show the Republican interpretation of fair representation.
