2012 GOP Superdelegate Endorsement List

We will track all of the 2012 Republican Superdelegates (officially known as Automatic Delegates) and list who they currently are endorsing for the nomination. We will also track any changes in endorsements as they occur. We will only post endorsements that can be proven by a link. Word of mouth does not work for us.

Each state, and American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands all have three superdelegates, except as follows:

Superdelegates from the following states: AZ, DE, FL, GA, ID, KS, MD, MI, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NV, SC, UT, VT and WI are bound by their state's results, and therefore are not included in the list. Their names can be found in a separate table after the break. This leaves a total of 117 GOP superdelegates,

1/3/12 - Replaced Perry supporter Chris Healy (CT) with Jerry Labriola Jr., who took over as chairman of the CT GOP state party in June. This reduces Perry's count to 2.

1/4/12 - Removed Michelle Bachmann as a candidate after she ended her campaign. She had no endorsements.

1/9/12 - Texas GOP Chair Steve Munisteri has been added for Rick Perry. A radio interview from 8/16/11 voices his support in the last 2 minutes of the interview.

1/10/12 - Removed Ken McKay as Chairman of Rhode Island GOP. He stepped down in November.
- Added Mark Zaccaria as the new chair of Rhode Island.

Michele Bachmann's Migraines: A Doc's Perspective

Michele Bachmann gets migraines. So do 11 million other Americans. The initial report said that hers were incapacitating. And that's possible: migraines can last from several hours to several days. Some are well-controlled by analgesics, barbiturates and narcotics (called abortive drugs). Some patients with more serious cases require what are called preventive medications, generally taken on a daily basis. Some people are relatively disabled by the condition. For others, it's a minor inconvenience, albeit a painful one.

One magazine said that this was a sexist way of looking at things because more women than men get migraines. It's true that the ratio of women to men with migraines is about 3.5:1, but it would only have been sexist to report if that media outlet had similar information on a male candidate's medical condition and buried it.

As a doctor, what is of interest to me is how severe Bachmann's migraines are, and whether she only takes abortive meds, or abortive and preventive meds. Her campaign said that she's medicated, and that she has not been affected to a level that has affected her current position. Her voting record indicates that she's not great at attending votes. For example:

Neither Bachmann nor Stewart addressed the specific allegation in the Daily Caller story that Bachmann has been hospitalized for the headaches, including once instance on Friday, July 30, 2010.
According to Congressional records, of the 15 votes that took place that day, Bachmann did not participate in nine of them.

Further, from 2009:

Of 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, only ten have missed more votes this session than Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, according to the Washington Post’s tally. Bachmann has missed 105 votes, or 13.6 percent of all votes.

And this:

An analysis by the Minnesota Independent shows that Bachmann has missed more votes than any member of Minnesota’s congressional delegation in the 111th Congress — even after subtracting votes missed when Bachmann left to spend time with an ill family member.

Travel schedule? Migraines? We don't know.

It's hard to know which side effects she could be operating under, as there are so many different drugs used for migraines. But many of them include things that incapacitate users, in addition to the debilitation of the headaches themselves.

Most medical conditions are worsened by physical and mental stress. Migraines are no exception. There's a difference, however, between ulcers, for example, and migraines. Ulcers are pretty prevalent, definitely exacerbated by stress, and you feel lousy and in pain. Migraines are caused by abnormal brain activity, which is why the preventive drugs are not acid reducers, but anti-seizure meds, triptans, opiates and other serious drugs.

As a doctor, if I were treating a migraine patient, I'd tell them to live as normal a life as possible. If the patient wanted to run for office, I'd point out the probability that the migraines would increase, as compared to choosing a less stressful career, with far less travel. But I wouldn't say "don't do it."

As a voter, I'd have a lot of trouble voting for someone with a case of severe migraines. or certain types of epilepsy, or ALS, Huntington's. Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or a host of other neurologic conditions. For some of those conditions, the severity is what matters. If someone has an epileptic attack once or twice a year, it's not a big deal. If they're seizing hourly, it's a whole different thing. Same with migraines. Some will point out that FDR had polio and JFK had Addison's. Neither of them is a neurologic condition: neither affects the ability to think and make decisions. Sure "pain" makes people miserable and not at their best, but between episodes, there's no cognitive impairment. With a case of serious migraines, and the related drugs, impairment is likely. Think about it.
