Puerto Rico Governor Indicted

WE’VE MOVED! Democratic Convention Watch is now at http://www.DemocraticConventionWatch.com

Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila is among several people named in a sealed indictment, officials said Thursday, as U.S. authorities made the first arrests in a long-running probe into his party’s finances.

An Associated Press reporter saw at least five officials from the Popular Democratic Party as they were led in handcuffs into the U.S. federal building in San Juan. – AP

Gov. Acevedo is a superdelegate who has endorsed Barack Obama.

Geez, what’s going on with our Dems all of a sudden? It’s almost as though they’ve been looking across the aisle for the past few years and decided why let the Republicans have all the fun (well, except for the very impatient Jefferson).

If the gov. resigns or is forced to leave, who becomes governor? Are they already a superdelegate? Have they endorsed?

At this point the governor said he will not resign, so I guess he will still be the super delegate unless the party says otherwise.

more axe,

It would be like Spitzer, the Lt. Gov. would step in. That’s a very good question about who that person would endorse. For some strange reason, I somehow think he/she is a Clinton backer. That could be something we could have fun checking out!

Gotta love politics!

“Puerto Rico’s government has no lieutenant governor position. If Acevedo Vilá resigns or is removed, the territory’s constitution calls for him to be replaced by the secretary of state. That position is currently held by Fernando Bonilla, a specialist in maritime law.”

And politically:

“If Acevedo Vilá resigns–and no one seems to know for sure yet if he will–the new governor will be a relative political unknown, Secretary of State Fernando Bonilla. Since he is unlikely to be the party’s standard bearer, the real question now is who will lead the party in November elections. The PPD’s candidate for resident commissioner, Alfredo Salazar, is one possibility. He is fresh off a primary victory and has already endorsed Obama.”
