GOP panel recommends Milwaukee to host 2024 convention

Looks like Milwaukee will be the host of back-to-back conventions from different parties:

“Today, the Site Selection Committee voted to recommend Milwaukee to host the 2024 Republican National Convention and it is a testament to the forthright and professional behavior embraced by Milwaukee’s city leaders throughout the process. A final decision will be made by Chairwoman [Ronna] McDaniel and the full RNC in the coming weeks.” RNC senior adviser Richard Walters said in a statement.

Milwaukee beat out Nashville in Friday’s selection vote. Nashville’s bid to host the convention hit a roadblock last Tuesday when two city council members pulled the draft agreement to host the convention from the council’s agenda at the last minute.

GOP narrows 2024 convention choices to Milwaukee and Nashville

And then there were two:

Last week, the RNC’s site selection committee voted to eliminate Salt Lake City from contention as host city of the 2024 Republican National Convention. (Sources tell Playbook that SLC will, however, be considered for 2028.)

That leaves two cities left for 2024: Milwaukee and Nashville. We’re told that RNC Chair RONNA MCDANIEL was in Milwaukee on Wednesday to meet with the mayor and members of the host committee. Representatives of both cities will be in Washington next week to make their final pitches to the RNC’s site selection committee. Continue Reading...

Democratic Convention Starts Tomorrow

A quick news roundup the day before the 2020 Democratic National Convention starts, live from Milwaukee, well, everywhere:

The Washington Post details the production plans, including:

Homebound delegates will be dialed in to quick feeds of the live speeches, so their real-time reactions can be broadcast to the country as if they were in the same room as the speakers. Continue Reading...

Biden to give acceptance speech in Delaware

Well, hopefully they give Milwaukee the convention in 2024. Word is that only Wisconsin Dems will be in Milwaukee in 2 weeks.

Meanwhile, after giving up on both Jacksonville and Charlotte, Trump has, of course, floated giving his acceptance speech from the White House, which, of course, is totally improper, and likely illegal.

Dems move Milwaukee convention to convention center, delegates need not travel

It will be the first Democratic convention in a convention center since 1984 in San Francisco, and the first major party convention in a convention center since the GOP in San Diego in 1996:

The Democratic National Convention will move out of Milwaukee’s professional basketball arena, and state delegations are being urged not to travel to the city because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, party officials said Wednesday.

Convention update

A month ago I, and pretty much everyone outside of Trump and his circle, were pretty sure there was no way either party could hold on in-person convention. Now, I’m not so sure. I mean they could put 100 people in a walled off TV studio on the floor of the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, and Trump could give his speech, and the networks would have to cover it as the official convention speech – even if all the other convention activities were virtual.  And if it’s clear the GOP will hold some sort of in-person convention, will Biden feel he has to do the same?

Here’s a summary of how we got here over the last few weeks:

  • On May 12, the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee passed the changes necessary to support a virtual convention. Nothing from the GOP, yet, but they could make similar changes anytime they wanted to.
  • Yahoo News floated the following options:

The roll-call vote could potentially take place with one representative from each state entering the hall to announce their vote, one DNC member told Yahoo News. Another DNC member floated the idea of having each state’s representative join the broadcast by teleconference from a symbolic location in their state, such as a capitol building. An Open Letter to Joe Biden

Dear Uncle Joe –

First, congratulations on winning South Carolina.

Sadly, HOW you won exposes the inherent weakness of your candidacy and how you can lose in November. Then again, knowledge is power and if you pay attention, you may yet be able to win in November, which is all any of us non-cult people care about. Continue Reading...

Dem convention looking for 15,000 volunteers

The 2020 Democratic National Convention needs a lot of volunteers:

The aim is to sign up 15,000 people to help with the convention and the crush of 50,000 delegates, media and tourists that will come to Milwaukee, July 13-16.

There’s a minimum age of 16 to volunteer during convention week, but there will be opportunities for all ages to participate at events in the coming months, organizers said. Continue Reading...
