GOP and Dem Convention Updates

As we start 2023, here’s the latest on the 2024 Republican and Democratic National Conventions:

  • The GOP has announced their 2024 dates for their Milwaukee convention: July 15-18.  Two thoughts:  First, the Democrats get to go second (as the party in the White House), and will likely schedule to start on Monday Aug 19 or Aug 26. (The 2024 Summer Olympics end on Sun 8/11).  Second, any thoughts of moving to 3-day conventions have clearly been put aside.
  • Atlanta continues its effort to secure the 2024 Democratic Convention, which would be its first since 1988.
  • Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones is supporting Atlanta’s bid.
  • Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens makes the case:

  • Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot makes the case for her city:

Four cities present bids for 2024 Dem convention

Last month Chicago, New York, Houston and Atlanta made their case to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention:

Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot pitched top Democratic National Committee officials on Friday about Chicago’s bid to host the 2024 Democratic convention, bringing boxes of Chicago goodies and – in a show of how serious this bid is – themselves.

In separate presentations, the DNC officials – including DNC Chair Jamie Harrison, who attended via video, and new DNC senior adviser Cedric Richmond, a former top official in the Biden White House – Chicago, New York, Houston and Atlanta representatives made their cases to host the 2024 convention. Dems request bids to host 2024 convention

Eight cities were invited to submit bids:

Democratic leaders on Friday asked eight cities, including Chicago, Atlanta and Houston, to submit bids to host the 2024 Democratic nominating convention, according to a party official familiar with the request.

The formal call for proposals from the Democratic National Committee launches a quadrennial process that can bring nearly 5,000 delegates and as many as 45,000 other people to a host city for a four-night extravaganza, with dozens of sideline events and parties, aimed at unifying the country behind a presidential nominee. Chicago and Las Vegas likely bidders for 2024 Dem Convention

Finally getting some activity on the Democratic side:

Democrats are eyeing Chicago as a city of interest to host the party’s 2024 convention and the mayor, the governor and a key U.S. senator are coordinating on a plan to make it happen, the firm helping with a potential bid confirmed to NBC News on Wednesday.

While the discussions are early and informal, some national Democrats already see the Midwestern city as an appealing contender, in part for its heartland geography — touching key swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan — but also because of the comfort that would come with holding a marquee political event in a tried-and-true blue state, a source who has taken part in early discussions with national Democrats said. Presidential Primaries and Delegate Selection

For most people, the presidential election begins sometime after the mid-terms — either when candidates start to announce, or when the parties start holding debates, or just before the Iowa Caucuses.  But the actual planning begins much, much earlier.  Over the next two years, the Democrats and Republcians will be deciding whether to make any changes to the rules for the 2024 Convention.

Technically, the Democrats begin every cycle needing to adopt rules.  Of course, there are rules from the last time, and those rules will be mostly readopted.  There may be changes to some provisions, but the Democrats do not start from scratch.

As noted in Sunday’s post, the Republicans officially adopt their rules for the next cycle at their national convention.  Any change to those rules requires an extraordinary majority on the Republican National Committee with a deadline of September 2022 to make any changes for this cycle.
