Dems start to look at convention options

Political conventions don’t lend themselves to social distancing:

Top Democrats are actively considering a range of contingency plans for the party’s July convention, multiple top Democrats told CNN, including possibly shortening the in-person portion of the gathering or going entirely digital.

The planning, a result of the coronavirus pandemic, is in its earliest stages and party officials said there is no deadline for convention organizers to begin to shift plans. But Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez and other top party officials have begun to solicit guidance from advisers about the future of the convention, Democrats told CNN.

Shortening the convention does not change anything. Limiting it to delegates only also makes no sense – without the media, why have the convention? And limiting it to just the delegates is just as much of a health risk.

Face it, it is becoming more and more likely that there will be no convention held in Milwaukee in July.

At the local level, Missouri has postponed the delegate selection process. Originally, the county meetings to pick delegates to the congressional district and state conventions were supposed to take place on April 6. The current plan — subject to change — postpones everything by 7 weeks and combines the county/township/ward meetings with the congressional district conventions. (Basically as I understand the current procedures, there will be one large facility with the various component parts of the congressional district holding an initial meeting to choose delegates/alternate and the individuals chosen as delegates/alternates will stick around for the meeting of the full congressional district to choose the national convention delegates). We are still hoping to have the state convention within the time frame set by the national rules.
