GOP considering choosing 2028 convention site this year

Well, this would be a big change:

On Wednesday, Republican National Committee members unanimously voted to pass a new rule enabling the party to begin selecting its presidential convention sites six years in advance, leaving the door open for party officials to determine both the 2024 and 2028 convention locations this year. After that, the site reveal for the 2032 nominating convention would be made in 2026.
“Giving our Site Selection Committee the opportunity to start looking at cities seven years ahead of Convention is a smart business decision that will ensure the best possible event as our delegates select the Republican-nominee for President,” RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement to CNN.

Two years in advance to six years in advance is a big jump.  The other main issue? When a party controls the White House (in a first term, at least), where to hold the convention is really a decision for the White House to make, not the national committee.  Choosing the convention site 6 years in advance removes a first term president’s team from having any input to the decision.  But, it is true that cities fill up their available dates far in the future, and the parties need to remove any obstacles to cities wanting to bid for conventions. It will be very interesting to see how this goes.

Nashville and Milwaukee remain the two finalists to host the 2024 GOP Convention. A decision is expected later this year.

GOP narrows 2024 convention choices to Milwaukee and Nashville

And then there were two:

Last week, the RNC’s site selection committee voted to eliminate Salt Lake City from contention as host city of the 2024 Republican National Convention. (Sources tell Playbook that SLC will, however, be considered for 2028.)

That leaves two cities left for 2024: Milwaukee and Nashville. We’re told that RNC Chair RONNA MCDANIEL was in Milwaukee on Wednesday to meet with the mayor and members of the host committee. Representatives of both cities will be in Washington next week to make their final pitches to the RNC’s site selection committee. Continue Reading...

Is Milwaukee the front runner for the 2024 GOP Convention?

Politico seems to think so:

Leaders of the RNC are in Milwaukee touring the city with former Gov. SCOTT WALKER as part of its site selection process for the 2024 presidential convention. The verdict is already in, we’re told by someone familiar with the ongoing conversations: They love this town and it’s now the “frontrunner.”

One of the biggest appeals of Milwaukee, we’re told, is that it’s almost “turn-key.” The city of beer and cheese curds was supposed to host the 2020 Democratic convention before it was canceled amid the pandemic, so the infrastructure and planning are already far along. Continue Reading...

Pittsburgh drops out of running for 2024 GOP convention

Catching up on some recent news, Pittsburgh is no longer bidding to host the 2024 Republican National Convention:

RNC members tasked with considering the finalist cities’ pitches are scheduled to visit Nashville and Milwaukee, but not Pittsburgh. The only Eastern city in the hunt was initially expected to host a reception for attendees of the RNC’s winter meeting, which is also being held this week in Salt Lake City, but declined to do so.

Several people with knowledge of the site selection plan said Pittsburgh is likely no longer being considered, and a Pennsylvania Republican official familiar with talks about the convention said Friday they had just received word that Pittsburgh “was no longer in the running for the 2024 RNC convention.” Continue Reading...

GOP chooses four finalists for 2024 convention

And then there were four:

The cities in contention are Milwaukee, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City, according to a person familiar with the search process. Party officials are planning to visit each of the locations over the coming months before finalizing a decision in the spring.

Nashville in, Kansas City out, for 2024 GOP Convention

Nashville throws its hat into the ring:

Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. officials formally submitted the bid Dec. 8 to the Republican National Committee. That came after Republican Gov. Bill Lee’s office earlier requested they do so, the convention group’s president and CEO, Butch Spyridon, confirmed in a statement to the Times Free Press earlier this month.

Lee’s office also asked the visitor bureau to seek bid specifications from the Democratic National Committee, which has yet to provide them, according to Bonna Johnson, the Nashville convention bureau’s vice president of corporate communications. Continue Reading...

Milwaukee, Kansas City and Salt Lake planning bids to host GOP 2024 Convention

Milwaukee didn’t really get its 2020 Democratic convention, but is going after the GOP event in 2024:

Milwaukee’s formal bid to host the Republican National Convention in 2024 came in at more than 200 pages and was submitted last week.

It also talks about the city’s experience preparing to host the Democratic National Convention in 2020, though the event itself was largely virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Continue Reading...

Presidential Primaries and Delegate Selection

For most people, the presidential election begins sometime after the mid-terms — either when candidates start to announce, or when the parties start holding debates, or just before the Iowa Caucuses.  But the actual planning begins much, much earlier.  Over the next two years, the Democrats and Republcians will be deciding whether to make any changes to the rules for the 2024 Convention.

Technically, the Democrats begin every cycle needing to adopt rules.  Of course, there are rules from the last time, and those rules will be mostly readopted.  There may be changes to some provisions, but the Democrats do not start from scratch.

As noted in Sunday’s post, the Republicans officially adopt their rules for the next cycle at their national convention.  Any change to those rules requires an extraordinary majority on the Republican National Committee with a deadline of September 2022 to make any changes for this cycle. Trump Impeachment and 2024

Despite hopes for better from the Republican Party, Donald Trump again escaped being held politically liable for his misconduct.  Of course, President Trump is the only U.S. president in which members of his own party voted for conviction, but seven Republican senators out of fifty.

There were some surprises in the final vote.  Of the four Republicans who will be retiring in 2022, two voted to convict.  The only Senator currently running for re-election in 2022 that voted to convict was Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.  Given that Alaska has done away with party primaries and will be using a top four primary with ranked choice voting in the general, Donald Trump’s threats against Senator Murkowski do not carry much weight.  Of the other four votes, two come from long-time Trump critics — Mitt Romney of Utah and Ben Sasse of Nebraska — whom Trump would go after regardless of their vote and one came from Susan Collins of Maine who has always faced the need to triangulate between being a loyal Republican and the Democratic majority in her state.  The only Senator to vote to convict who is probably running again and was not considered to be  a member of the moderate/conservative wing of the Republican Party was Bill Cassidy of Louisiana (who like Collins was just re-elected and can hope that six years is long enough for this madness to pass).  And like Murkowski, Senator Cassidy is from a state that does not have partisan primaries.  He just needs to keep enough Republican support to finish in the top two and then win the run-off.

But the bigger question is what this means for the 2024 election.  Not being convicted means that Donald Trump is technically eligible to run in 2024.  And he will continue to make noise about running.  While the odds are that he will not run, his omnipresence will alter the trajectory of the run-up to that race.  While some would-be candidates (like Nikki Haley) are apparently going ahead with making initial plans, others are going to have to wait for Trump to  yield the field.  Candidates will certainly not be able to raise money from Trump supporters until he announces that he is not running.
